Would You Take a One-Way Trip to Mars?

Would You Take a One-Way Trip to Mars?

If you haven’t heard of it yet, Mars One, a Dutch company, is planning on sending four lucky participants on a one-way trip to on Mars in 2025. Yes, you read that right; there is no way back to Earth once you are there. More than 200,000 worldwide applicants for this amazing opportunity are more than ok with those conditions. Unfortunately for many others that are interested, the application period is closed.

[column size=”1/2″ class=”right”]Mars One plans to have these four astronauts live the rest of their lives on Mars, and every two years four or more participants will join them. Before their first manned mission to Mars, they need to prepare for their arrival. In 2018, Mars One will launch its first unmanned mission that will carry a lander with a robotic arm for capturing video, a satellite, payloads, and more.[/column]

If you can belive, Mars One is currently conducting a challenge with universities to build four payloads:

• A soil acquisition experiment that will collect soil for water production
• A water extraction experiment that will extract water from the Martian soil
• A thin film solar panel will demonstrate the possibility of generating the settlement’s energy by only using sunlight for power
• A camera system which, in combination with a Mars-synchronous communications satellite, will enable Mars One to send a live video feed from Mars to Earth.
• To establish a permanent human settlement on Mars.

They claim that this will be the next giant leap for humankind. This exploration of the solar system will bring the human race closer together. Mars is the next step of the voyage into the universe. Furthermore, human settlement on Mars will aid the understanding of the origins of the solar system, the origins of life, and human’s place in the universe. As with the Apollo Moon landings, a human mission to Mars will inspire generations to believe that all things are possible and that anything can be achieved with perseverance.

[column size=”1/2″ class=”right”]Mars One believes that human settlement on Mars will be the most profound and influential event of the 21st century. In 100 years, children will learn about this time and they will know the date of the first human landing on Mars. It will be common knowledge that this was the first established colony beyond Earth.[/column]

This will be the first privately funded planetary exploration mission. Mars One has estimated that the manned mission to Mars at $6 billion. Once landed on Mars, these new “Martians” will participate in a reality television show on Earth to continue funding the mission and program. They expect the second manned mission will cost roughly $4 billion. Your chance to live on Mars in 2025 might be past, but they again (if you can belive) are colling everyone to become part of the Mars One community and make a one-time or monthly donation and shop at their web store to support the mission.

The real question is what’s the real purpose, and who is actually behind it?
