[column size=”1/2″ class=”right”]Have you ever wondered what actually happens in your brain when you’re happy or upset? Are you curious how dreams and ideas originate? Have you ever been stumped at why you can’t remember someone’s name or why you can’t get a song out of your head? Pixar attempts to answer all those questions and more in their latest animated movie, Inside Out, a grey matter adventure about emotions, personality, and imagination.[/column]

Inside Out takes place inside the mind of 11-year-old Riley. From the moment she was born, her emotions of Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger, and Disgust have helped her create and catalog memories to help define her personality.
Joy’s job is to always keep her happy.
Fear is around to keep Riley safe by being cautious of the unknown.
Disgust is in charge of not letting her get literally poisoned by yucky foods like broccoli and socially poisoned by negative people.
Anger keeps the world in balance by allowing Riley to let off some steam. And Sadness’ job is to… well actually no one knows why Sadness is around.

After an accident that ejects them out of the command center headquarters, Joy and Sadness must venture through the deepest recesses of Riley’s mind through the Islands of Personality, Long-Term Memory, and Abstract Thought to make it back in time before Anger and the rest of the crew give Riley a bad idea that could affect her life forever.

This movie is pretty much a psychiatrist’s wet dream as it creatively shows how everything in the mind works. The Emotions run the brain like they are on the deck of the Avengers Helicarrier. Their command console has many buttons, knobs, and levers to help make decisions to create experiences and shiny memory orbs. The most cherished and influential orbs become core memories. A fun time playing with a friend or the first time learning to play a sport are some examples of experiences that evolve into core memories.

[column size=”1/2″ class=”right”]Those core memories generate the Islands of Personality which in turn define one as a person. In Riley’s mind she is defined by her islands of family, friends, honesty, and her favorite sport of hockey. She is even defined by how silly she is as her core memories created Goofball Island. This is just one of the many intricacies that the movie has. You don’t even have to take a PSYCH 101 class to understand everything, because Inside Out takes the most complicated of thought processes and mental procedures and easily explains them with relatable objects and concepts that even a child can understand.

We cannot express in enough words how much we loved Inside Out. It’s ingeniously clever for adults to appreciate while still being fun and adorable for kids. This is a movie that adults don’t even have to have kids in order to attend. If you are looking to take the family to a fun animated adventure, than take my recommendation and check this movie out because, Inside Out literally has every emotion push all the right buttons. 🙂
